Moving from California to Texas

When one thinks of California, we imagine beautiful beaches, sunshine and surfing, gorgeous Redwood trees, mountains, and perfect temperatures. Or if you’ve been listening to the news lately, your thoughts may go to the political or economic climate on the west coast. Whatever comes to mind, it’s true that California is a beautiful, beloved state. But despite all California has to offer, many people are trading it in for an easier, more affordable way of life. The high cost of living, extravagant income tax, and real estate costs have driven many Californians to take up residence in other states.

Texas is one of the most popular destinations for Californians in search of a new home. In fact, studies show that they make up roughly 13% of those who have moved to Texas since 2010. In the last decade, Texas has become the fastest growing state, and it’s no wonder. Texas is super cool.

For starters, Texas has no state income tax.

This is a huge draw for entrepreneurs looking to start their own business, as well as large companies who desire to offer more for their employees. In recent years, several large companies have relocated to Texas (or have announced their plans to do so) including Google, Apple, Hewlett Packard, Toyota and Tesla, creating greater employment opportunities and higher salaries. Plus, home prices in Texas are nearly 60% lower than those in California (approximately $400,000 less), and we have one of the top 10 growing economies–yay!

Our beaches may not compare, but there is plenty to do across the state.

Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and other large cities have much to offer to those looking for an exciting nightlife. This includes dining, sporting events and teams, music, museums, night clubs, and shopping, just to name a few. For those who prefer the great outdoors, we’ve got you covered as well. Many communities have ample access to trails, lakes, and state parks so you can get out and enjoy the infamous Texas sky. And despite what you hear about the hot summer days (sorry, it’s true), Spring and Fall here are glorious!

For the foodie, it’s important to note that Texas has received high praises when it comes to our food!

It’s no secret that Texas offers outstanding choices for higher education.

We have over 200 colleges and universities, including high ranked schools such as Texas A&M, University of Texas Austin, Baylor, Texas Christian University, Rice, Texas Tech, and Southern Methodist University. Large and local colleges alike employ a large number of our residents. We love the energy these schools bring to our communities!

Perhaps our greatest quality, and what we are most known for, is our hospitality.

Texans are, and we say this with humility, some of the best humans you will ever meet! In general, Texans are friendly, authentic and welcoming. You can’t walk down the street without a “howdy” or hello from a stranger. People here genuinely want to know their neighbors! We depend on one another, support local business, and care for those in and around our community.
